Learning languages gives pupils opportunities to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. They explore the similarities and differences between other languages and English and learn how language can be manipulated and applied in different ways. The development of communication skills together with understanding of the structure of language, lay the foundations for future study of other languages and support the development of literacy skills in a pupil’s own language.

Languages in Year 7-9

Our language programme begins in Year 7 with every student required to continue their Mandarin studies from Prep. This will remain compulsory until the end of Year 9. Year 7 students will have the option to select another language from French or Spanish, which they will continue into Year 8 and 9.

Languages in Year 10-11

In the GCSE years, students may continue their foreign language studies from Year 9 in Chinese, Chinese (as a Second Language), French, and Spanish.  During Global Outlook Week, Year 10 and Year 11 language students are offered the opportunity to go on an language exchange trip to their country of their language studies.  Such experiences offers greater depth into our students' language studies and help open up their global perspectives.

Languages in Sixth Form

When students reach Sixth Form, they may continue their language studies with A Level courses in Mandarin, French and Spanish available as subject choices.
