Primary
A Quality Education

Kellett School provides the foundation for learning, in a happy, caring and stimulating environment. Children recognise and achieve their fullest potential, in order to make their best contribution to our global society.

Every day is an adventure in learning. Our committed staff deliver a quality education, both in class and through our diverse Extra-Curricular and enrichment activities.

Small classes, with a low pupil – teacher ratio, ensure that our children work closely and effectively with their Class Teachers, Specialist Teachers and Educational Support Assistants.  Class Teachers have an overview of the children’s emotional well being and academic attainment.

Curriculum

Kellett offers a holistic education that follows a modified English National Curriculum.  The curriculum is structured to enable children to meet or exceed the expectations of the English primary schooling system.

Kellett begins with the reception year and its curriculum builds a solid foundation for future learning.

The following six areas of learning are incorporated in the Foundation Stage Curriculum:
• Communication, Language and Literacy
• Knowledge and Understanding of the World
• Physical Development
• Creative Development
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development
• Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

Kellett’s primary classes place a strong emphasis on high levels of attainment in Literacy, Numeracy, Science and ICT.  Subjects may be taught individually as pure subjects or within integrated themes, where experimental and collaborative learning are an important strategy.

The curriculum includes:

• English • Design Technology
• Mathematics • Music
• Science • Physical Education
• History • Personal, Social and Health Education
• Geography • Mandarin
• Art • French (as an elective from Primary 3)
• Information Communication Technology

The adventure in learning is supplemented by regular concerts, performances and assemblies which intersperse the year.  These public performances offer children a great way to develop their confidence and public speaking skills.

Musicians, artists, authors, performers and speakers regularly visit the school to share their passions and adventures.

An International Perspective

The curriculum is enriched with frequent local, and residential trips as well as an overseas educational visit, closely tied to the curriculum. It looks beyond Kellett to the outside world, allowing our children to gain an understanding of themselves and their responsibilities within the global community.

The study of a modern foreign language is compulsory.  Children study Mandarin from Reception, with French offered as an option from Primary 3. Both languages are taught through a spiralling, sequential and communicative approach. The content is theme-based, age appropriate, expansive and practical.

The Chinese language surrounds us in Hong Kong and is considered to be a language of the future. Its importance, economically as well as socially, is rapidly increasing. Chinese is taught as a modern foreign language based on the English National Curriculum Modern Foreign Language Programme.

French is a melodious and beautiful language, used extensively around the world. Studying French provides a head start for learning other Roman languages like Spanish, Italian or Portuguese.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Our students are offered the choice of a wide selection of extra-curricular activities which reflect the school's passion and success in sport and the creative arts. In addition, participation in the Federation of British International Schools in South East Asia and East Asia’s annual sporting and music events offers our students international competition and collaboration.

The School Day

The children usually begin and end the school day with their class teacher who teaches literacy (English), numeracy (Mathematics), Humanities, Science and Personal, Social and Health Education.  Other teachers take classes for Languages, Music, Physical Education, Art and ICT.  A qualified librarian oversees the Library.

The school day begins at 8.30 a.m. for all children and ends at 2.30 p.m. for Reception, Primary 1 and Primary 2.  Primary 3, 4, 5 and  6 finish at 3.15 p.m.

All children finish school at 2.30 p.m. on a Wednesday, to allow everyone the opportunity to take part in an Extra-Curricular Club.

In the first term, Reception children attend school for a half day and finish at 12.30 p.m.

An Expanding School

The Secondary Section is expanding year after year at the Shau Kei Wan campus. The Kellett School Association is committed to extending to a full secondary provision up to Year 13 (18 years of age). We have secured a green field site in Kowloon Bay to build a new campus which will be ready to house the Secondary Section from Year 7 through to Year 13 in 2013. The Kowloon Bay site will also house a new Primary Section, which will be additional to the current Pok Fu Lam Primary Section.
