Overview

Kellett School is an independent British International School celebrating its 30th year in Hong Kong. Our Patron is the British Consul-General in Hong Kong, Mr. Stephen Bradley. The school serves the English speaking community of Hong Kong. The majority of our parents are high achieving expatriates with similar expectations of their children and their children's school. Kellett has an excellent reputation in the local community for academic excellence, curriculum breadth and pastoral care. It is a school of first choice for many parents and is over subscribed. Kellett is registered with the Hong Kong Government and is owned and operated by the parents, through the Association on a not-for-profit basis. Parents are actively involved and very supportive of their child's/children's school. The Association is a registered company, limited by guarantee, and recognised as a charity in Hong Kong and the USA. Kellett is a member of The Federation of British International Schools in Southeast Asia (FOBISSEA) and the East Asian Association of British International Schools (EAABIS). The school is an Associate Member of the Council of British Independent Schools in the European Community (COBISEC).

Leadership and Management
The Principal manages the School and reports to an elected Board of seven parents. The Board also includes the School Administrator, and an independent Education Advisor sitting in an ex-office capacity. The Deputy Principal and a staff representative sit by invitation. The whole School Leadership Team comprises of Principal, Deputy Principal, Bursar, Assistant Principal, KS3 Leader and the Primary Literacy & Numeracy Leaders. The Middle Management Team (MMT) comprises of Specialist Teachers, Subject Leaders and Phase Leaders. Teachers from across the school are invited to contribute to SLT and MMT discussions when and where appropriate. All members of staff contribute to school working parties and are expected to actively participate in school development.

Curriculum
Kellett follows the National Curriculum, modified for our international setting; wherever possible history and geography are taught within the local and regional context. Children are set for Mathematics in Years 5 and 6. We believe in educating the whole child and are committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum. There is provision for specialist teaching in Physical Education, Music, ICT, Mandarin and Art (not Reception). Members of staff are expected to contribute to the school's extensive extra curricular programme including sporting activities, school camps and residential visits, educational visits, performances, concerts and whole school community initiatives. The school is committed to ongoing curriculum development which is supported by a high level of INSET. Link to recent INSET providers

Standards
Standards at Kellett are well above the UK average but we believe quality is not only defined by test results. There is a comprehensive assessment framework in place to track children’s progress through the school. This incorporates the Foundation Stage Profile, PIPS (Performance Indicators in Primary Schools) and National Curriculum Tests. Kellett is committed to regular monitoring of standards through data analysis, classroom observation, scrutiny of work and pupil interviews. This process informs school improvement. The school is regularly reviewed by UK based registered OFSTED Inspectors. The most recent inspection in March 2006 described Kellett as ‘a good and improving school’.

Primary School
Kellett promotes a nurturing environment that values children as individuals and celebrates their achievements. There are currently approximately 430 pupils aged from 3+ to 10+ years, in 20 mixed ability classes (Reception to Year 6). There are four Reception classes with a maximum of 19 children per class. The rest of the primary school is three form entry. Classes are capped at twenty-three pupils. The teaching staff currently totals twenty-nine in number, including twenty class teachers, specialist teachers of Mandarin (3), music (2), PE, ICT, Art, Special Educational Needs and French. Year groups plan in team and there is time allocated within the contact week for collaborative planning. All class teachers have generous non-contact provision within their working week. Teachers are supported by a team of 24 education support assistants, a librarian, learning resources assistant and a school nurse within the school. There is an excellent administrative, caretaking and housekeeping staff.

Children can enter primary education in Hong Kong up to six months earlier than the UK. Admission to Reception is in the September of the year children are four, (January 1st - 31st December). There is a non-selective entry to the primary school, which welcomes children of all nationalities provided that they are fluent in English at a level which enables them to fully access the curriculum. Two EAL children may be admitted per class. Pupils with special educational needs may attend the primary following an assessment to ensure that the school can provide an appropriate programme to meet the child's individual needs (and these needs will not prevent the child's peers gaining full access to the curriculum). In reality Kellett SEN pupils rarely exceed School Action and needs are most usually met by differentiated teaching within the classroom.

Key Stage 3
In September 2007, Kellett opened Year 7. This year the school will run up to two Year 7 classes and one Year 8 class working on an accelerated KS3 curriculum which correlates wherever possible with the ISEB Common Entrance curriculum. The Year 7 team currently comprises of 2.5 staff; the KS3 Leader responsible for Maths and Science, the Form tutor responsible for History, Geography and PSHE and the English and Drama teacher. In September 2008 the KS3 core team will extend to 4 FTE teachers. Other subjects are taught from within the existing specialist team who are all secondary trained. The Year 7 team is developing the foundations upon which the anticipated Kellett Secondary School will stand. There is a strong focus on allowing pupils opportunity to gain independence, whether this is independence in their learning or independence in organising their time and activities. This is coupled with significant use of ICT to enhance learning.

Working at Kellett
Kellett School benefits from a highly professional, committed and hardworking staff.
We seek to appoint members of staff who are committed to working as part of a team, sharing expertise and subscribing to the Kellett School aims and ethos. There is an expectation that staff will contribute to the school’s extra-curricular programme. The pace of life in international schools can be demanding. Working as part of the Kellett team is professionally challenging but equally rewarding. Our pupils are delightful, motivated, enthusiastic and eager to learn. They deserve only the very best that we as teachers can offer and their parents maintain high expectations. Our experienced and committed staff give generously of their time and humour contributing to the success of the school at every level. The school is committed to providing high quality CPD, investing in a high level of INSET for all staff;

Facilities
The school is generously resourced. The premises currently comprise of 25 classrooms, SEN Learning Support base, kiln room, cooking room, art room, two well equipped music rooms, auditorium, dance and drama studio, science lab, gymnasium, resources room, ICT room with twenty six work stations and Internet access, a large library and adjoining study room. Promethean IWBs are fitted throughout the school. In addition to the IT Room there is generous laptop provision for Reception, KS1 and 2 pupils; KS 3 students are equipped with personal laptops. There is a large covered play area for Reception children, an astroturf play ground/netball court surrounded by an attractive garden, adventure playground, paved garden and roof playground. Kellett follows the Hong Kong norm of urban design. External views of the school are misleading; the apparently compact building houses (by Hong Kong standards) generous and spacious amenities. Games lessons and extra curricular sporting activities take place off site.

Location
The school occupies purpose built accommodation on the south side of Hong Kong Island at Wah Fu, near the Hong Kong University, Queen Mary Hospital and Aberdeen. The school catchment area extends to all of Hong Kong Island and, from time to time, to the outlying islands of Lantau and Lamma. The majority of pupils arrive and leave school by bus.
