Following are the procedures followed in School in the event of a fire. As parents, you should be familiar with the exit routes from the school building. If you are at school when a fire alarm sounds, please follow the directives of the teacher you are assisting. Should you be in the Cooking Room, you will escort your charges to join their class in the playground, by going up the library stairs.

Fire drills are held every term, with a full drill at the beginning of the school year, to familiarise the children with these procedures.

On hearing the fire alarm (a continuous ring)

  1. Teachers escort classes down designated routes to playground assembly points, closing classroom doors after them.
  2. Children are reminded to remain silent from the moment the fire bell begins until dismissal in the playground.
  3. Teachers check the corridors and toilets as they leave.
  4. Once in the playground, office staff hand out registers
  5. When classes are lined up, teachers take roll call.
  6. Children on errands will go straight to the playground and join their class there.
  7. Children with specialist teachers or out of the classroom with support teachers will be taken down to the playground by this teacher.
  8. Children in the library will be taken down to the playground by the Librarian, assisted by any mothers present. Children in the cooking room will be escorted to the playground by the mother there.
  9. Teachers/mothers should always precede children enroute to the playground.
  10. Two classes may use the stairs at one time, by walking single file on each side.
  11. If two classes are in any one room, they will be escorted by more than one teacher, with one at the front and one at the back of the line of children.
  12. If the fire bell rings during Assembly, exit by the normal routes to the playground.
  13. If there is a breach of security at school, an intermittent alarm will sound. The school will follow the fire procedures as set out above, and assemble in the playground.

To maintain the security of our children it is essential that every parent ensures all entry doors are pulled or pushed closed after them. The school doors will not close automatically.
