Tristan Strobl
1984 to 1986
I remember my Kellett days well. The scrapes on the astroturf spring to mind, (just as they seem to do for many who attended in the 80s and contributed here), as does lining up in the playground when that great big bell would be rung by hand, and going to Cubs in the gym after school. Out of the teachers, I particularly remember Mrs Lamont because art was one of my favourite subjects and has been a life long fascination. The yearly camps to places like Lantau or Lamma helped me learn more about Hong Kong. I also remember the great time in Primary 6 being top of the school and having two wonderful teachers: Mr Marshal and Mr Miller, and our trip on the Huan.
My family moved to Hong Kong at the beginning of 1984 from Manila, and I spent 3 great years at Kellett, starting in Primary 4 until I left in Primary 6 in 1986. My brother and sister also went to Kellett. After leaving I went to the German Swiss International School on the Peak for a year and a half, before which we left Hong Kong for Seoul.
I am now in Sydney working in the financial industry and studying law part time at university. But after leaving Hong Kong I continued my fascination with China in general by studying Mandarin at university in Australia and then later twice going to study Mandarin in Beijing, the most recent time being for 10 months during 2003. Hong Kong has changed so much over the years since I lived there in the ~{!.~}80s. It was very interesting to live there for a year in 1997 during the handover when the streets were packed on the night of June 30th. Hong Kong and Kellett were a very influential part of my childhood.
I have fallen out of contact with everyone I went to school with but I still remember many faces and names. I would love to hear from anyone else who was in Primary 6 in 1986, or anyone who is studying Chinese or involved with China in someway. It would be interesting to hear what you're up to.
